Weekend Round-Up

Rampant Welbeck make it six of the best.

Welbeck Colliery continued their excellent form with their sixth straight win to remain at the head of the table as they cruised to a seven-wicket victory against Kiveton Park.

Kiveton won the toss and batted first but were dismissed in the 50th over for 188 with only Adam Dutton catching the eye with 74. Welbeck's bowling attack has been in good form all season and this continued with Jonathan Ball grabbing 6-45 from 13 overs, with excellent support from Richie Bentley (3-37).

The home side overcame this below-par score for the loss of three wickets inside 45 overs with Matt Higgins leading the charge with an unbeaten 88 and Robert French chipping in with 30.

Clifton are now in second despite losing their 100% record when they secured a winning draw at Papplewick.

The visitors batted first and will have been content with their knock when they closed on 259-9, with Dan Birch (91) and Scott McNeill (30) doing much of the damage.

Papplewick got within 30 runs of the total in a closely-fought game when they replied with 233-8.

They were in the game thanks to 68 from Alex Lloyd and 50 from Chris Briggs. For Clifton, Paul McMillan returned his best Premier League figures in taking 4-35 with Alex Turner providing support with 3-50.

West Indian Cavaliers dropped from second to third after suffering a three-wicket loss away at Kimberley.

The Cavs batted first and may have thought that 282-5 would have been enough to at least avoid defeat. The architects of this total were the Afzaal brothers, with skipper Usman scoring his second ton of the season (111 off 96 balls) and Aqib playing second fiddle with 80.

His opposite number Sam Ogrizovic followed suit with exactly 100 from 125 balls as the home side reached their target with one ball to spare for the loss of seven wickets with Andrew Platts hitting 45 and Jon Terry 44. Alex Tudor returned 3-72 for the Cavaliers.

The Nottinghamshire Academy consolidated their fourth place when they inflicted the sixth straight defeat on home side Belvoir.

The county side's batting has been their powerhouse this season and that continued at Knipton when they declared after 44 overs on 255-3.

Tom Rowe and Sam Wood have been in fine form and they both continued the trend with 91 and 85 respectively. The declaration was vindicated when they needed 51 overs to dismiss the home side for 169, despite 58 from James Needle and 53 from Tom Neville.

Mansfield Hosiery Mills grabbed an impressive seven-wicket home victory against Cuckney.

The visitors had first dig and posted 250-6. Richard Stroh (39), Elliott Hind (35) and Will Butler (64) all chipped in to the total and Kyle Garside starred with the ball for Mansfield in securing 4-55.

Hosiery Mills overcame this total in the final over for the loss of only three wickets with runs from Paul Burdett (78), Sudesh Fernando (63*) and James Fraser (39*).

Notts Academy 255-3 dec in 44 overs (20 pts) beat BELVOIR 169-in 51 overs (3 pts). For Notts Academy: T Rowe 91, S Wood 85. For Belvoir: J Needle 58, T Neville 53.

Wollaton move out of the bottom three as Caythorpe fall short

Wollaton moved out of the bottom three in the Nottinghamshire Cricket Board Premier League for the first time this season after a thrilling winning draw under gloomy skies at Caythorpe.

Caythorpe had the game within their grasp after Wollaton dropped three catches – two off successive balls. But the home side threw it away with some poor shot selection as the overs ran out.

They will also rue their seven wides and two no balls and their failure to turn several casual singles into two runs.

Remarkably, Caythorpe are still sixth in the table, despite failing to win a match to date.

Caythorpe won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first in chilly, windy and overcast conditions.

Wollaton's total of 220-9 was laudable in the circumstances.

It owed much to openers Dave Smith and skipper Ed Savill, in his last season with the club before he leaves the area. He will be missed.

Savill made a patient 41 before he was trapped lbw by veteran spinner Jimmy Hindson, while Smith was three short of a deserved half century when he holed out to Josh Mierkalns in the deep off the other spinner, Stephen Randall.

Owen (4) was bowled by Randall, while Young hit a useful 43 before he was unluckily run out, backing up, when the diving Hindson deflected a straight drive back onto the stumps.

Bentley hit a rare four, but was well taken by Mierkalns next ball to leave Wollaton on 200-6.

Keely (28) was caught and bowled by Hawley and Ian Dodd was easily caught by Hemmings off Hindson.

King will be disappointed with his dismissal, when he was well held by Shafique, waist high, off Randall, trying to get off the mark with a big hit.

Hindson then comprehensively bowled Goodrich to finish with figures of 4-67. Randall took 3-56 and Hawley 1-22.

Caythorpe started their replay at a snail's pace. Welton, still to find his touch this season, went with the score on ten after four overs. He was snapped up by Goodrich off Owen without scoring.

Wollaton old boy Steve Allcoat finally got the scoreboard moving with a square cut for four as the home side struggled to 22-1 off the first 11 overs.

Allcoat then produced the shot of the day, a glorious cover drive for four, to force a change in the bowling.

Hawley was content to play second fiddle to Allcoat, who looked in good nick and they took the score along to 90-1 off 25 overs.

Hawley hit the first ball after drinks for four but was bowled next ball by Smith for 23.

At 118-2 Caythorpe looked well set to win and their biggest worry was would Jean, the tireless tea lady for over 30 years, run out of milk? (She got through 12 pints during the day).

Smith, having a fine match, then struck again, bowling Oldham for nine.

But the turning point came when key-man Allcoat was caught by Dodd, off the same bowler, for 76.

Nevertheless, at 157-4, it left Caythorpe only needing to score 34 to win off 30 balls.

But Hartley (15) threw his wicket away, hitting new spinner Keely straight to Smith (3-51). And then Hindson, well placed on 37, went for a big hit against Keely (2-20) but only picked out Bembridge coming in from the boundary.

A lot now rested on Mierkalns, who is recovering from a serious illness. But he was comprehensively bowled by Owen (2-50) for only seven leaving Caythorpe struggling on 202-7.

In the end Caythorpe were left needing to score 17 off the last over, in poor light, to win.

It was mission impossible, but they certainly gave it a good go as Cope took ten off the first three balls, including a six that just cleared the fielder on the boundary.

In the end they came up just short on 217-7, helped by 35 extras.

Wollaton certainly kept "celebrity" scorer Anne Cusworth busy with a staggering 20 wides.

Cusworth, who is also scorer at Trent Bridge, has been at Caythorpe since 2000.

"The lady who scored was moving away and I was asked to fill in for the last four weeks of the season," she said. "I was hooked and the rest, as they say, is history.

"I went on a course to learn how to do it properly, where I met my mentor, the late Gordon Stringfellow.

"He was a brilliant man and I decided I wanted to be like him.

"I got my big chance when he asked me to fill in for him in the NatWest Trophy match at Lord's. I almost dropped the phone when he called, I thought he must be joking, because I'd never even been to Lord's."

It made Anne the first officially appointed lady to score at Lord's. And she went one better when she scored in the recent international between England and Bangladesh at Trent Bridge.

Keyworth move back to the top thank to club stalwart

Keyworth moved back to the top in D after club stalwart Rob Baker and Dave Strong took four West Bridgfordians wickets apiece to dismiss them for 151.

Keyworth also held on to all their catches, eight in total. After the break, Geoff Tindsley (61) and Ted Elliott (37) paved the way for an eight-wicket win.

Teams in D may rue the day that Nick Silverwood returned to Bottesford.

Bramcote made 141 with all rounder Pete Hollingsworth firing 67, but this proved no obstacle for Silverwood, who struck an unbeaten 91 in 22 overs.

Hucknall II's batsmen were at it again in E with Ian Lobb (101) passing 300 runs for the season. Lee Smith weighed in with 79 and the home side's 287 was 201 too many for struggling Caythorpe III, who had little answer to the consistent Graeme Lake (4-21).

In the local derby, Farndon blasted 278 through in-form Daniel Hubbard (78), Martin Hill (50) and the entertaining Andrew Duckmanton (40).

Newark R&M II never seriously threatened for victory and made do with 194-5.

Epperstone (182) may be bottom in F, but they pushed leaders Kinoulton all the way.

Anthony Aduhene fired a fifty for the losers and the game was hanging in the balance right until the final over when Shaun Campbell (49*) hit the winning boundary off the first ball.

After two consecutive defeats, Ravenshead got back to form, hammering Whatton and Aslockton (73) by eight wickets.

The visitors could only muster nine players last week and looked out of sorts again with Numan Shafiq, Alistair Fearn and Saddiq Mohammed all claiming three wickets.

In G, East Leake (78) suffered a nasty reversal at Burton Joyce. Darren Smith took 5-21, making it 11 wickets in a fortnight.

Two of the early front runners met at Lenton Lane and it was Unity II (165) who just came out on top against Belvoir II (153).

Mark Taylor made 55 and grabbed two wickets for the winners in his first bowl for six years. The real star with the ball though came in the shape of Maneesh Mishra, who took 5-26.

There was a second win of the campaign for Hickling, who restricted winless Underwood to 145. Hickling had the jitters at one stage on 8-3, Matt Thorley taking all three wickets. But there were few further alarms as Ian Welbourn (64*) and Peter Playle (43*) saw the home side through.

There is no change at the top in H after comprehensive victories for both Flintham and Hucknall Rolls II.

After last week's heroics with the ball, it was back to the day job for Flintham's Matt Lyas (73*) who, together with Geoff Peatfield (47*), knocked off the 129 required at home to Lenton Abbey.

Rolls had few problems against West Bridgford Legion (164) with fifties for Graeme Wright and Phil Swannell setting up an eight-wicket success.

Gedling go eight points clear at the top

Unbeaten Gedling Colliery pulled eight points clear at the top of the Newark Alliance after crushing Balderton by eight wickets.

Balderton were shot out for 96, John Esam carrying his bat for 25. Gareth Hayes (4-29) and Ryan Easom (4-33) did the damage.

George Billam (30*), Duncan McKeown (23) and Graham Burton (21*) soon knocked off the required runs as Gedling made it six wins from six matches.

Two teenagers caught the eye in Division Four. Matthew Dean (16) hit 77 and Will Peat (14) scored 76 to help Calverton to 226-3 against Farndon, who finished on 207-8.
